Andrew Jackson, 7th President of the United States. Born on March 15, 1767 in the Waxhaw Settlement in South Carolina; though just a boy, participated in the battle of Hanging Rock during the Revolution, captured by the British and imprisoned. Author and naval officer. A close friend of Washington Irving, Paulding collaborated with him to produce the satirical periodical, Salmagundi. He also wrote poetry, fiction, and a popular biography of George Washington. President Martin Van Buren appointed Paulding Secretary of the Navy in 1839, in which post he served until 1841.
